I live in SE Oklahoma.
The last 3x that I have bought ammo have been interesting.
The first time - 22Lr shells, the young man asked for my ID, then asked if they were to be used in a rifle or a hand gun. (I told him target pratice)
Second time - 357 shells, no questions asked & no request for an ID.
3rd time - 16 gauge shells, again asked for an ID and asked if they were for a rifle or handgun ( again I just said that they were for target practice)
This was all at the same store with the same clerk.
??? in a town a few miles from home. And I do not know the people there.
Actually the 22s & 357s were for rifles & I'v never heard of a 16 gauge hand gun, but it all seems a little odd.

Yes, I was at the WalMart store. few miles from here.
I know that the request for ID was not to confirm that I old enough, I'm 60+, and not likly to be thought of as under age.
And why do they care what type gun I may be using?
I think that I will be going back the gun shop. I've never been asked this type of question, nor for a ID.

I'm up in Mustang and I was asked this once. I told the clerk that I was an illegal alien, I didn't have any identification and I needed the ammo for harvesting my chickens and goats for Cinco de Mayo. We both got a good laugh out of it and I've never been asked again.

went into wally world to get ammo on a sunday. I aske the kid behind the counter for 222 shells, he looked at me and said with some question.. Just two? ....then he cought on.. two boxes oh sorry... dork.
didn't go back for years and then on a sunday needed ammo, ask dork number 2 for some 28 gauge shells...
he told me that I wanted 20 gauge shells.... no, I corrected him, thinking I'd been speaking to softly... 28 gauge.. he said, They only make 12, 16, and 20 sir...
That's funny, I have a 28 out in the truck. I called my friend with the sporting goods store in town and he hooked me up...never picked up anything for hunting at wally world since. ;D

Walls, that was classic! You know, sometimes a visit to Wally leaves me confused as whether to be frustrated, laughing or feeling pity. I try to avoid the place if possible.
I suppose that asking for ID must be just a company policy that they're required to do of anyone. They don't record that info (yet). As far as why they would care what you were going to use it in, that just blows my mind. It may have to do with some areas that don't sell handgun ammo to persons under a certain age.

We bought a 20 gauge for the kids I was waiting for them to bring out from the back so I grabbed a couple boxes of shells , salesman come back to the counter I ask the to ring up the shells and he says sorry sir I cant sell you the shells at the same time. I look at him perplexed and shake my head. My wife says OK I'll buy them so out the door we go with an escort since we just bought a shotgun in a box disassembled.
Yup I pick up .22 shells at Wally-world also.
I get ID'd and asked if the shells are going to be used in a Handgun or rifle. Regardless I always say rifle. Its none or there buisness if its for my .22 handgun there going to ID me anyways. I look over 21!
I picked up some subsonic rounds for varmit hunting once also and the clerk asked " sub-sonic whats that mean?" I said "there not as loud" I got a weird look, and said there for hunting squirrels and woodchucks. "OH" the clerk said... :P
I also picked up a .22 rifle at Wally-world once. I got escorted out with the manager carrying the rifle. It was quite intresting. I didnt even pick up ammo with it.

Wally world cash registers won't proceed with an ammo sale without a birthdate entered. Most clerks look at my gray hair and just type in something, I've never had to show id.
Now, buying a firearm there is a real trip. Escorts out the door and enought security checks getting the dadburned thing out of the back room to begin with.
My small town (one stop light) gunshop owner knows my name, lives down the paved road from me, offers me a cup of coffee when i go in on Saturday morning, does layaways ("I'll put it in the safe, pay me what ya can, when ya can"), and has even given me ammo and such and told me to just pay him next week.
Guess who gets my business, Wally World or Mr. Lee?

Ok, I can see why WalMart does not want to sell ammo to underage people, so Maybe ID. a nd if the cash register is set up to require a birth date, OK.
Why do they ask if the ammo is to be used in a handgun or a rifle? Is there a reason that Walmart cares what a white haired Granny does her shooting with?
I've never bought a gun from them & after reading about the "escort service", I won't be.
I'll do my buying from a gun dealer or a private individual
from now on.

Lots of places do that, yes even some small gunshops. Gander Mountain does it too.

Any place were you are escorted out the door won't get my business. if you can't see the door from the spot were you paid for the arm, then it's to big of a store for me.
Hillery was on the board of advisors for wally-world..that's why they are so hard on gun owners. Ours only sells muzzle loader kits, she and Fast Eddy are buddy buddy...what's that tell you?
At Wally-World if you buy ammo for a handgun you have to be 21 years old or older.
