My ex husband has been making death threats to a friend and stalking her and is constantly threatening to commit suicide.

He says he still loves me and isn't coming after me. He is so unstable that doesn't make me feel safe.

He has a permit to carry a concealed weapon and God knows how many guns, registered and unregistered as well as a half completed homemade machine gun and books on bombs.

I'm thinking of buying a gun and applying for a concealed gun permit. Maybe also taking martial arts classes.

Anyone know of a website or other info on how to get started, and the pros and cons of taking such an action.

Krav Maga is a Martial art you can learn fast and is effective. Yes,do get your own CCW permit, and seek out a qualified and trained professional for training in using a firearm. Research what laws are applicable in your State.

Do you have any previous firearms experience yourself? If not come back and ask about. For a starter gun if you never have I recommend a simple 5 or 6 shot .38 Special (SPL) . It is affordable, easy to learn on, simple to operate, easier to load and unload, safer to see that it is loaded, and not difficult to carry in many different outfits.

If you feel more comfortable, there are womens only gun forums. With different perspectives on what is necessary and carry.

I've been thinking of self defense training myself, not because of any specific threat but because of my job (I'm a security officer) there could one day be something I have to take care of.
I have only one time had a challenge to my authority, and then I just quietly said "be careful you don't want a 51 year old grandmother to take you down to the floor and I don't want to have to." and the big guy backed down. Thanks for your post armysarge, I'll have to look into your suggestions. I also have a field manager who wants me to take weapons training (mostly because they make more money if I have it) but I have close relatives who have mental and emotional problems and I would have a problem being able to limit their access if I owned a weapon (They are always into my things.)

Geter done...

I have my doubts that any of the ex's guns are registered unless you live in NY state.. Which so far as I know is the only state to do so.

I didn't look to see a profile figuring you would not have added that info anyway, and like I said only NY so far as i know.

I can tell you from first hand experience the police may not come and if they do, it could be too late for you. "To Serve and Protect" is a generalism towards the public, and does not mean the police are your personal body guards.

If I were you before I got the CCW which will require time to learn about and have a fee which varries from state to state, is to buy the best home defence weapon you can afford.

That would be a 12 gauge shot gun, and loaded with 00 buck shot to keep it simple. The action type should be a pump shot gun, as single shot isn't enough, a side by side isn't either or a over under. These have only 2 shots.

A semi auto loader for a new shooter isn't a great idea, because after the first shot that gun is all set to go bang again if you don't select the safety.

The way a pump gun works is easy and simple, offering more shots with manual operation between each shot.

A home defence gun like this is a bit shorter than for most hunting, and so easier to hang on to in a skuffel.

Some lessons with that should be in order, but that learning can be quickly accomplished.

Another thing you might think about is turning that machine gun in, as there are laws about building fully automatic guns these days.

I have forgotten the date where doing this was made an act of LAW and is forbidden now. There are only so many fully automatic guns out there and these ARE registered. If you don't have one and want one you are pretty much forced to wait to buy one of the already registered guns.

I would assume that turning that gun in will get the ex off your back for a very long time.

Books : he can have all the books he wants...

Stalking is also illegal, but there isn't much the courts will do.

Since he hasn't made threat to you, probably you can not get a restraining order, but you can try.

If the victim of this alleged stalking can prove to a court that this is true, and get a restraining order, she can swear she knows this ex also has guns and he won't anymore..

The police will act on that and appear warrent in hand and remove all the guns hey can find. If then anyone witnesses the ex with a another gun he gets a vaction...
