Illinois gun laws?

Hello all!

The family is going on vacation this summer and we'll be spending about a week in IL. I know they are not a CCW state but I've been told they have some REALLY SCREWY gun laws. Kind of like they don't even what you bringing a weapon through their state.

Any one here live in IL and know the laws or have experience with them?

I DON"T travel with out a weapon, but I would like to know what I'll get into before I get into it. ;)

My brother inlaw is a chief of police up there and he says you can't bring one in unless you have a state issued firearms owner's ID. I forget the exact designation. Anyway, let me know if you can find out different.
