Here are some links for surplus powder. Widener’s also has it sometimes. There is also a link for “Rex” powder, which is new powder from eastern Europe. I don’t know anything about it.

I’ve had good luck with surplus powders. You must be careful with the loads and follow the instructions carefully. New reloaders might need to get advice before using them. The very slow powders available at Bartlett’s are fine for standard rifle loads. You may need to use a magnum primer. You won’t get top velocity, but the accuracy so far for me has been above average. Pressures seem to be well within the limits.

The 4895 is probably the same as the IMR and Hodgdon stuff. It is a very versatile powder that can be used in semi-automatics such as the .223, .308 and .30-06, and most other mid range rifles.

The stuff that is sold as being similar to AA #9 I haven’t tried yet, but other surplus handgun powders have done well for me. I have some it on order.

The stuff that is sold as being similar to AA #7 also looks like good stuff. I bought a bunch of it recently. I haven’t tested it yet, but other who have say that it is very good stuff.

Depending on how the upcoming election goes, this might be the time to really stock up on powders and primers. The last time the leftists were in control, ‘92 to ‘94, they not only passed the “assault weapons” ban, but were planning on doing much more. They were talking about requiring a “arsenal license” for anyone who possessed 1000 rounds of ammo, or components for assembling 1000 rounds. To get the license you would have to consent to as many as two or three warrantless searches of your home per year. The results of the election of ‘94 are what saved us until now.

They are on the verge of being in control again. Next year at this time, it might be very difficult or impossible to buy this stuff in quantity again. You might have to get an arsenal license. So, you might want to stock up now.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but I found a source for .308 bullets. These are 152 gr. flat base bullet. Pulled from .30-06, they have been tumbled and resized. Will work in .308, but the cannelure is not in the right spot. I use Lee Factory Crimp Die and I have had no problems.

No financial interest in the company, just good bullets at a good price.

RVO has been out of action for a while. The original owners were a husband and wife team and the husband past away sometime back. Since then, not much has been happening. The website is severely outdated. If you're looking for surplus powder try here: http://www.patsreloading.com/patsrel/prices.htm

I've used a lot of Pat's surplus powder and have never had any issues.
