View Full Version : Stocking Up?

Been noticing that reloading supplies, primer, powder etc., is flying off the shelves and I'm hearing that back orders for some items is months long. Post election fears and all.
Are any of you stocking up on anything? I just purchased 32lbs of powder and matching number of primers for what I reload - just in case - plus the price was good and I know it won't go to waste. If for no other reason than it'll be hard to get or cost a bunch more when I need / want it.

Store the powder and primers double well and safely. I too see this going on here. The saturday after the elections was a mad house all over town. I ended up going to three different places here and in another town to make all my guesses on what I might need for the future. If nothing else I will be able to reload for many years, or at least well past these next four. Just two if everyone gets enough of him to start putting back republicans in the house and senate two years from now. If we are still allowed elections.....

I've been stocking up for a couple years on ammo and reloading equipment/supplies because it's my desire to be well-stocked and prepared on all of life's basic necessities (huah self-reliance!).
Thankfully, I avoided some of the price increases in the last two years and the mad rush that started around election time.
Shelves are pretty bare of reloading components at retail locations and online suppliers. When they do get stocked, they're only on the shelves for a VERY short period of time. A lot of semi-auto rifles are on backorders that extend to 8-12 months.
A lot of shooters who are not well-stocked have been complaining about their inability to get a box or two of rounds or components and blame it on stock-pilers. Frankly, we still live in a free market economy (kinda....bailout anyone?), and short of the government nationalizing retail stores and implementing rationing, the lesson to be learned by everyone - occasional shooters and mass reloaders alike - is to be prepared and well-stocked regardless of the economic situation or party in power!

I don't reload, but I've been trying to stock up on ammo for a couple of years now. I can only afford a box or two each payday, but I get what I can when I can.
After reading the articles about the plans to encode and track every bullet sold, I'm going to redouble my efforts to stock up as much as I can before anyone can pass that bill.

You are doing the right thing, regardless of what's going on politically or economically. That box or two will quickly add up. Good on ya.

I just took a gander under my reloading bench. I figure I have 80 pounds of powder and 75k primers, Lord knows how many bullets. I think I am good for a while.
I had a job for a few years that paid very well so I stocked up while I could. I knew it was temporary money so I set stuff back accordingly.
Tough times ahead for gun owners.

I have been narrowing my powder selections by choosing those that are the most economical and versatile. For rifle cartridges I chose Hodgdon 4895. This powder can be loaded in my .223, .243 winchester, .270 winchester, .30-30,.30-06 and .45-70. Accuracy has been excellent in all of the above mentioned cartridges. I havent' compared groups to my pet loads yet in the .223 and .270 winchester, but for all others there is no noticeable change in grouping. I sacrificed a little velocity in some cartridges and gained in others, but not enough (< 200fps) to really make any difference. For pistols I chose IMR 700X. This is a very economical powder and works very well with cast bullets. I currently load this powder in 9MM, .38/.357, .40 S&W, .44magnum and .45 ACP I also use this powder in my 12 guage loads and light cast bullet loads in the .45-70. For magnum pistol loads I chose the Hodgdon Little Gun Powder. This is a great powder for magnum loads in the .357 and .44 and I can also use it in my .22 Hornet and .410 loads. Winchester 296 is also a good powder for magnum pistols, .410 and the .22 hornet but the Lil Gun gives you more velocity out of the .22 hornet and lower pressures all around. I was sitting around digging through all of my powder one day and noticed I had a pound of this and a pound of that.....most of the containers doing nothing more than gathering dust. It's alot easier to justify buying an 8 pound keg of powder when you are able to use it in more than one or two cartridges. I'm not saying that these are the best powders for all of these chamberings, but they are more than adequate and it's my belief that when you are stock piling... versatility is the way to go. I also have bullet molds for my .30 calibers and .45-70 and for all of my pistols. Lee bullet molds are a bargain at around $20.00 a set. I have taken deer with the .30-30 and .45-70 useing a 16-1 lead/tin alloy with excellent performance.

One of my problems is all the left over cans of powder with just 1 or 2 oz left. It's so annoying to have only enough Herco to make 12-13 .357s or enough 4831 to make 3-4 30-06s. That's another reason to standardize with a shortlist of powders, then you can buy in bulk and not worry about using up remainders.

Funny you should mention that, I have been doing the same thing as well as adding a couple of sets of dies to the mix.
Nothing bugs me more than to have an odd number of reloads.
(Is it just me or or does everyone have odd combinations/numbers of full/empty shells)

We went through this stuff when old Amorous Bill Clinton was in the White House. I stocked up then, too. Things are a little different these days though, seems I am taking this time a little more seriously. But then again maybe I'm just another of those bitter Americans' clinging to our guns and religion that Obamalama was talking about.

I keep around 100# of powder, 25,000 bullets, 50,000 primers and a couple of cases of burbon
Ahh, local law enforcement may be monitoring this thread, so I'll mention right now that I only store legal amounts of gunpowder and primers in two separate locations.

As far as I know black powder has a 3lb storage limit then you need an explosives license , smokeless powder does not have a limit .

Do you have a statutory or regulatory reference for this 3# requirement? I don't think personal stores of blackpowder for private reloading purposes are regulated to this extent, barring local or state regulation.

I'm wrong , when I got my FFL and ammo manufacturers licenses they asked me if I wanted a explosives license to keep more than 3lbs of black powder . Things have changed since then , 50lbs or less no license needed , its at the bottom of page three .
