Hey, I picked up some Hornady 44 caliber 240 grain lead swc's and they look to be high quality to me. Then again, Im still a semi-novice at reloading. So... my question is... can someone offer me a good load suggestion for 44 mag leadheads at below leading the barrel issue speeds in either bullseye or red dot powder? I know, I know... I could go with something like 2400....but I think that bullseye is much more economical being a hotter powder. Typically I fill in the extra case space with a large inert filler (read: gritz) which is left over from my bp revolver days, and I've never had a problem.

Anyway, I did some loads in 7.0 grains bullseye behind the 240 SWC leadheads, which I also coated with lee alox. Any thoughts on this recipie? Suggestions?

Keep them under 1100 fps, and there should be no problem. I always like up to 9 grs. of Unique under that type slug. 7.5 of Unigue might be better and have lsee recoil.

Any good manual can help you out.
Good luck!

Hi HF
Since they're Hornady bullets I checked my Hornady manual. They use a max of 7.2 grains of Bullseye to get 1000fps. That's not max pressure, that's the max speed they want you to push their rather soft swaged-lead bullets.

If your reloading interest spreads to casting, you can make Lyman's cast version, 429421. I cast it hard, with 90/5/5% lead/tin/antimony alloy and push that with 16 grains of BlueDot

What the man said! ;D

I also have used Unique for most of my .357 and .44 lead loadings (158-grain Lead SWC-HP's in .357, and 240-grain Lead SWC-HP's in .44), and a pound of it lasts FOREVER on these more "docile" loads!

And I concur, Hornady lead SWC-HP's are very good. I like their "dry lube" they slick up the bullets with. Gotta clean the dies occasionally, but that's OK!

Good Luck, and BE SAFE!

Not sure about the load but if you get the barrel SUPER clean removing ALL traces of copper fouling. Your leading at reasonable FPS should be light to none. Worked for my .45 but I only shoot 850 fps.
