A neighbor up the road has a beagle that likes to wander down this way on a very regular (almost daily) basis. My pyrs and anatolian just don't see him as an enemy to be chased away. *They chase away all other dogs and critters that come into the area, but consider this one beagle a friend. They even let him eat from their food buckets and nap with them. *Is there anyway to convince them that this is not a friend?

I can't let my chickens out to range because of the beagle hanging around. *I just don't trust this beagle. When I do let the hens out, I have to sit and watch them to keep chasing the beagle away.

I asked them to tie it up to no avail. *I called AC to ask them to tie it up. But it is still down here almost every morning at feeding time and doesn't leave until it sees the bus drive past with his kids every afternoon. I try to chase it away, but as soon as I come into the house, it comes back. It's gone from about 4pm until 8 the next morning again. I don't want to take it to the pound because they have a bunch of kids that love the dog. But it is a beagle, so I can't trust it with chickens running loose. (My dogs don't bother the hens. *They have zero prey drive.)

Is there anyway to teach the dogs that this beagle is not a friend, so they will keep it off the property?

If it was me i would not teach my dogs to go after the beagle, then they might become dog agressive and if you ever tyr to get another dog they might attack it. I would put my dogs up and wait for him and then shoot him in the butt with rock salt or some thing. Just my thought

I'm certainly no professional dog trainer, but I have raised quite a few. I was going to ask, what do your dogs do when you loudly shoo the stray away ? They wouldn't take the hint ?

No offense to the breed, but one of the meanest dogs I ever saw was a beagle, she would sneak around behind you and latch onto a mouthful of your calf. :D

I agree racerrick. Load him with rock salt or a low-powered BB gun. Beagles are sneaky mean though. Not openly growling and barking. They get you when you aren't looking.

MI Mom-- These are LGD breeds. *Dog aggression is expected from the breeds toward strange dogs. That is why people have these breeds to keep away predators of any type. I wouldn't mind a little dog aggression from them.

This beagle doesn't seem to bite, but we don't really pet him or try encourage him in anyway. *He just seems lonely during the day when nobody is home at his house. *When I run toward the dog gruffly saying, "GET" my dogs look at me like, "Why did you do that? *He's our friend." They see him as a pack member for some strange reason. But he does chase chickens which none of the LGDs do. *I don't want him to do it or to teach them to do it either.

Thanks for the replies. We really aren't dog-shooting type people, so I may just have to keep the hens caged or watch them if they free range.

Shoot him with a BB gun. That won't really hurt him unless you hit an eye.

Howdy

Used to have Beagles when I was younger. They are smart, fun, inquisitive, and hard headed.

IF you really need to do something about it, try this. Load it up and take to the next shelter BEYOND your nearest local shelter.

Make sure he has his collar so they can identify and call the owner. The further they go, the more it costs, the more likely they MIGHT eventually get the idea to keep him home.

Good luck

My chihuahuas run out the door yapping and nipping the dog's heels. The huge dogs just sit there and watch, while the little beasts chase him away. *But then again the little rats chase the chickens worse than the beagle does. They yap and nip and chase anything that they see animal or human!
