Does anyone raise potbellied pigs as livestock? I would think, due to their size, they would be a good meat animal on a small place.

I thought of it when I saw some for sale here but after reading up on it found that they are not good eating at all. They are very greasy. A better choice is the Guinea Hog which is also small but good eating. They are rare and fairly expensive though.

I have no experience, but a friend of mine raised them and she said they were good eating. she used the grease for soapmaking.

Well, soap makes sense and perhaps they would be good to render lard. I'm not counting on veg. oil being available when TSHTF. Thanks to both replys.

The "true" PB pigs I have seen (that would be generally the vietnamese or vietnamese/domestic crosses) would be more of a pet rather than livestock. I think if you are looking for eating/rendering you'd do better with a domestic hog. JMO
