OK, we went out to the barn this morning and found this:

I put some quarters next to it to show perspective.

On the one side of the bail of hay is a matted down section like something slept there and it was definitely bigger than my cat. Then right next to it is the "stuff" mostly mouse parts. Wasn't there last night for sure. The dog is out all night long and there are at least two layers of fencing something would have to go through to get there, also most of it electric!!! The cows are sleeping only 20 ft from this spot, and they were not upset that you would notice... The chickens are about 15ft from there and not a one is harmed.

Here is a close up of the stuff:

We can only think coyote but can't imagine it would sleep and then deficate on top of a bale of hay??? Plus how did it get in and out so easily and nothing harmed except obviously quite a few mice!

Any ideas?

Snakes! Actually the biggest and only snake we have around here is a tiny foot long garter snake.

Just had a neighbor from down the road stop by - he thinks my dog barfed. I also think it's too "wet" to be scat...

was it sweet or sour?

seriously, looks like cat barf to me - sometimes they can hurl a prodigious amount and the mouse parts fit -

I vote cat or owl

I was also thinking owl perhaps. Or cat... The stuff did not "stink". Plus my dog totally ignored it so made me think it was from something he was familiar with like the cat.

Had a neighbor stop by for some roosters and he thinks it's dog barf - said it looked just like when his dogs eat mice.

Never a dull moment for sure!

Yes, I meant to get back here. Later found the cat curled up in the very same spot. Had no idea that many mice could fit inside her - she's not that big! But it must have been her after all.

my money is on the cat. with an owl the chickens would have carried on. It is quite big though. but my cat barfed up four mice on my bed, it looked similar.

I said nothing to the cat. she had gotten herself locked in. but I said plenty to sweet hubby. He was always complaining that the cat was not doing her job because the mice are scurrying every which way when you go into the chickenhouse.

I think what is pretty neat about it is she was able to throw it up in the shape of an "S" Now if you could just find one in the shape of an angel you could sell it on E-bay.

My cat often Yaks up stuff that looks a lot like that. He kills and eats rats and mice and I guess often as a city cat he just can't handle it. Often there is some cat food mixed in but it looks a LOT like that. Do you have any kitties?

Oh and it isn't snake poop. I have about 20 "pet" snakes from small ones to a few pythons and boas. Some do some nasty pooing but nothing that looks like that.

Update - I should have read the entire thread, ::) Well at least it appears I got the right answer.
