View Full Version : Re: one less possum
We have a few live traps all out year around, and if we didn't the nesting birds would take a huge hit! Also then as summer went on my gardens would also take a HUGE hit!!! (been there done that)
We are completely over run with oposuum's and coons... I've also already eliminated two ground hogs too!
I know this is hard to believe, but dad trapped over 50 coons one year! (and NO he didn't catch any of them more than once)

I have found the best bait for these situations is sardines. Sardines packed in oil works every time for me, sometimes I just poke a few small holes in the can and it has never failed to catch something.
I change baits often... One bait is, take a marshmellow and pull off a small piece. Put that just inside the door of the trap, and the rest of it in the back... A hotdog works pretty good... As was said, sardines will work, and also what ever mice i catch in traps in the garage will work too... Another is, chicken bones from dinner.....
Many times i'll have more than one of these in the box at a time...

I use exactly the kind of things like DM suggested. Sardines are great, if you're in a generous mood, or they're good just to have on hand and use in a pinch if you don't have any cheap or free bait. The hotdogs are excellent and cheap. When you trim meat, save ham meat and any chicken or beef scraps in plastic baggies in the freezer and label them "bait." Then you'll always have some good bait on hand. If you're a fisherman, save some of the little bluegills and freeze and label as bait.

Well we've been plagued with a lot of possums over the years. Since our grandson has taken up coonhunting , the dogs have lowered the number. Now just need the bears to stay away. He is interested in getting bear dogs for that.

Get a couple of rat terriers. Opossums and coons soon avoid the place. ;D

i've used empty tins from catfood/dogfood for bait - works well until the smell goes away but, by then, i've usually got another can emptied -
had a rat terrier - got him to control moles and voles - don't know if he was lazy or just backward but he'd have none of that - independent little s.o.b. -

Rat terriers- Yep independent little buggers. If they want to hunt they hunt. (We got ones that would rather hunt than eat) If they don't want to than there is no lazier dog on this planet.
