When I was a kid...Canada geese didn't nest this far south, not even close...they merely passed through...now I see mated pairs all over the place....from small ponds to lakes.
Seagulls never existed around here....now they follow the tractor while hay is being raked looking to scavenge dead mice and try to mooch french fries at fast food joints.....we're 200 miles inland here!
What the, Hey!?

I know just what you mean. I am from the mountains and there are now seagulls in my neck of the woods. Just like you said, following the tractor. they show up for the spring plowing and eat the ground worms. When we were kids we would have collected the eggs and made a dent in them, but that is not allowed now. Crows used to follow the plow, but there are not many crows now. My folks are 800 km from the sea. Hercules plants and seagulls. I wonder what is next.

Around here, all the Canada geese congregate in the rich neighbors huge lawn. They don't bother landing here. If they DO land here, they take off as soon as they see my 4-wheeler or truck. That's because i used to harass the living h&ll out of them. I'd chase them, and throw whole strings of firecrackers at them. I've hardly had to do that for a couple of years though, because they seem to teach their young to stay away from here. Opps, sorry for straying off topic...the topic is "whacko bird behavior" right? ;D

I don't know how far inland northcentral Montana is but the seagulls show up here during spring plowing and some seem to stay most of the summer.
also this year there are some birds that look like mourning doves; but instead of a beautiful mournful call; they have a kind of harsh cry. They never left this fall and my husband says they don't normally winter this far north; and here they are - they are eating out of the bird feeders :-/
