Dirt daubers? Are they moles or some type of insect?

wasps I think, unless there is another type of insect... They pull up stuff like 1/4 inch holes on tools, wood blocks intended to hold drill bits, and make other holes full that sometimes don't like to be full.
I would have no idea how to get rid iof these, as I should think you would need to see them arrive. Once in a while I do, but I can't tell which tools will be the ones they nest in..
When I find the hole caked up I stick an awl in it, which is a sorta gushy thing to do... many times I find no one home, and a sandy like material is all that is left.
These don't appear to eat anything, or do damge unless the holes were a fan vent on a power tool.
So far as I know they don't eat wood like carpenter bee's and ants do, so they don't cause much if any damage.
