About two weeks ago, the ducks wouldn't go into the bunny barn for me to shut them up at night and when I went in to check, there was a tiny baby 'possum there. it escaped through a hole leading into the upper barn, which husband promptly patched for me...

this morning I was feeding and watering the Angora bunnies as usual. I have to climb up on a small step stool to reach a couple of bunnies whose cages are hanging on the wall above two others...

As I climbed up and was placing the feed in one's feeder, I came eye-to-eye with a small 'possum....who had made a wonderful home/nest in the black plastic tray underneath the rabbit's cage! He had evidently been there in and out a few days because had made him a nice round nest in the shavings and leaves....there were also two egg shells there showing what he'd had to eat...

He just sat in his little nest and stared at me....didn't move.,..

I called husband and he and adult son were five minutes away so they came up....he pulled the tray outside AND the 'possum got away!

I will set the trap tonight (It's a have-a-hart humane live trap) and try to catch him or her and then we'll release him to some of the 100's of acres of timber land not too far from here...

But I can't understand why the bunnies were ignoring him; the injured rooster that's in a cage in the bunny barn floor was ignoring him; and the ducks had spent the night (and possibly the last several nights) ignoring him....

did he or she just get lost from his mother and decide to move into a comfy home?

I know if he gets bigger he will kill and eat chickens because I've seen it before....we've trapped about nine larger 'possums here through the spring and early summer but hadn't seen another since we saw the little one several days ago (til today).

I did capture the little 'possum in a Have-a-hart trap last night so he/she will be released in some acres and acres of land that a timber company owns....it's probably illegal to release him/her but I can't bear to kill him/her.

It has sat there in the cage most of the day with rings of chickens skirting the area....

I traped a possum night before last. I guess it was about 5 pounds or so. Animal controle came to take it to a rescue group and they will check it's health and turn it loose out farther in the country.
