bee hive stain or paint

can anyone recomend a stain for beehives. last year I painted my hives, but this year I am putting in 3 more. I would like to just stain the hive. I figure one coat of stain is as good as or at lest faster then 3 coats of paint. the base coat and the two coats of paint.

I can I just use any old outdoor stain or does it have to be someting special so as not to effect the bees.

Clarence....

I havn't been happy with most stains, preservatives and paints.......I like to use porch and deck paint...it's tough stuff...tough enough to walk on...it forms a strong protective shell and lasts a long time.
