If you grow vegetables or keep livestock on ANY scale, you will want to follow the progress of House Resolution 875, The Food Safety Modernization Act of 2009. Under guise of protecting the food supply, it permits the government to supervise the production of food at ALL levels and provides fines and punishment for those who do not comply. They won't have any trouble finding YOUR garden. Using Google Earth, I can identify individual tomato and squash plants growing in the raised beds in my back yard! Does this sound familiar?
"I stopped you because you have a burnt-out taillight. You don't mind if I search your car, do you?"
HR 875 translation:
"I'm here to inspect your garden. You don't mind if I search your property do you?"

Okay, hold your fire. I just read the bill (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h111-875) and found this not to be true.

Under Section 3, Paragraph 13B, "Exclusions," the law very clearly states: "For the purposes of registration, the term ‘food establishment’ does not include a food production facility as defined in paragraph (14)...."

"(14) FOOD PRODUCTION FACILITY- The term ‘food production facility’ means any farm, ranch, orchard, vineyard, aquaculture facility, or confined animal-feeding operation."

They're targeting packing facilities. Farms, both big and small, restaurants, soup kitchens, and fishing boats are excluded.

THANK GOODNESS.
