I get used books at the library and recently got a crafts book that had a chapter on tambour. Its a form of embroidery that uses a hoop but the yarn, or thread, or floss, is pulled through a loosely woven material and hooked in a chain with itself repeatedly to make the designs. It is very simple, but you can make really striking effects. If you use a fine lace like material you use fine thread and the designs you "tambour" look like they are just floating there. You can use coarser material and make rugs or wallhangings with thicker yarns or even strips of cloth. The name of the musical instrument "Tambourine" comes from this type of embroidery because it looks like the material in a hoop.
I don't believe I've heard of tambour. It sounds interesting but these days I can't even convince myself to sit down to the sewing machine. Are you going to try it?

I've got the hoop and the thread and a crochet hook that should work to pull the thread through. I'm trying to decide on what material to decorate.

A couple of the regency romance books I've read have mentioned someone working on a tambour frame. I've never checked into it though as I thought it might be the same as, or very similar to crewel embroidery.

I remember my mother's aunts using them, kept the cloth tight so that you could see the pattern of the work. I thing the she used one also, more than 50 years ago, now.
