I have a 20 by 100 foot fenced garden. *I am growing beans and other vining plants on the perimeter, growing up the fence. *I would like to protect the plants from deer eating them through the fence from the outside.
*I was wondering about laying a barrier of pallets, flat on the ground along the fence on the outside. *Do you think it would act as a "cattle guard"? *I *thought the deer might be afraid to step on the pallets due to the slats. *Then again I dont know deer behavior to well.
*What do you folks think?

Thanks

the last i've read about it, it seems deer are more detered by a wide barrier than a tall barrier - especially if they have trouble seeing what they'll land on if they do leap a fence - the article said a single wire on each line, about 5 or 6 feet apart, with flags or other attention-grabbers, worked well - hard to figure -

don't think pallets would do much. deer are able to get over very high fences...but if they don't have to.. they won't have you looked at orchard fence?

Human hair would be a better way to keep them away than the pallets. A motion sensor light might also help as well.

Thank you all for your responses. I was thinking more about keeping the deer away from the sides of the fence, as opposed to keeping them from jumping the fence. To keep the deer from eating the green beans that grow through the fenceing. I thought the deer may be afraid to walk on pallets that were layed flat in front of the fence.
I will try the human hair trick.
Thanks again.

Human Hair? IS that why I never see Deer at my Barber shop? :P Sorry, could not hold that back.

I need to ask...do you have a dog? Deer at a trick. They chang with the world. I have come close to hitting them in big towns. I once had them here in my lawn, until I got back into Dogs and now the Deer keep a distance.

Could always have beans and Venison.
