I finally got started on my straw bale garden in the back yard. Two seasons ago I put down weed cloth in a 20 by 25 ft area that I was going to use to store nursery stock, but that project is much slower than I thought! So I want to make a nice garden in the area.

Here is the start:

I'll put the weed cloth down somewhere else this year to create another garden. ;-)

Here is how I am going to edge this one - I want this to become a flower/herb garden eventually so want it to be easy to edge.

I want to create a "garden room" in the back left corner in this shot. The grape vines on the arbor will screen that area along with the fence and arborvitae. Then I can look out over the straw bale garden. I do this alot - create nice places to relax but never take time to enjoy them! Go figure...

Except - when I picked up the ground cloth, I found the following! It's a huge tunnel, and I have no idea what might be living there!

Is this tunnel at the lowest spot under the weed cloth? If so it could be the path of least resistance to the rain water that just drained through there. Is there any evidence as to what kind of critter could be there? Like scratch marks, or rubs or spore?

It's a serious tunnel - turns a bit after going down. I have no idea what would make a hole that big around here. It's at least 4 inches in diameter. It was covered with the weed cloth so couldn't have been an entrance or exit. Maybe Jake will catch whatever lives there now that it's exposed. ;-)
