View Full Version : Spring Fever!

Anyone besides me got spring fever? I don't see how some of you folks who live snowed in half the winter do it! I can't wait to get my hands in the soil and plant a crop. Actually, I guess I did get my hands in the soil a little today. I planted some onion sets in a really large flower pot outside. I'm about ready to turn the winter wheat under and work in some more compost and manure in the garden. I'll be starting some broccoli seeds along with a few other things in the next day or two.

But I'm ready for steady 70 degree temps. I'm ready to wet a line, drown a worm, and catch some fish. I'm ready to start some of the projects I've been planning all winter like the green house, the chicken coop, the herb garden, and hopefully our house (though I really need to sell this one first).

The weather is teasing me here. We've had several days around 70 only to drop to highs in the 30's and 40's. Last year I bit at the early warm weather even though I knew better. We had broccoli, cabbage, brussel sprouts, onions, and potatoes in the ground by the last week of march and a float bed full of hundreds of tomatoes, peppers, and so on. The first week of April hit with a vengence! The crops in the garden were all ok, being cold weather crops, but the plants in the float bed all died. I still had plastic on and didn't have enough heat overnight when it dipped down to around 20 degrees. If I had only put in a heat bulb I think it would have been ok but It caught me off guard and the float bed was 20 miles away from our house.

Anyway, chomping at the bit to get things started this year! What about you guys? Anybody else ready for spring? What kind of projects will you be doing?

We had three glorious days here also and I was outside in it as much as possible!
Posted my progress on my blog:

We got a good start on projects but there is still much to do - I think my lunch hours will be out in the garden for a while now to try to catch up. At least it's staying light a bit longer too.
