I want to start making lap robe/ baby blanket size quilts using a mock "Cathedera Window" pattern that I saw on a website. It used circles for the backing and put the squares in it then turned the edges of the circle over the sides of the square so it looked almost like the regular Cathederal Window pattern. The person who designed it, I believe it was a man, suggested putting a small piece of batting behind the squares in the center to add warmth but I think the pieces could be made into a regular quilt by putting them on the batting and backing and quilting "in the ditch" where each mock square joined another.
Has anyone ever made one of these or seen one made?
I've decided to order precut squares from Keepsake Quilting to use instead of cutiting my own. The circles are supposed to be made by tracing around a saucer or the like. That's something I can easily do without having to buy a lot of equipment since I've already got the needed scissors. I want to use broadcloth instead of muslin as I think the added weight will help the quilt hold up better for longer.
Any comments or questions will be sincerely appreciated.

Molly,
Just be sure and use 100% cotton fabric. I imagine those pre-cut squares will be more expensive. The greatest thing ever invented for quilters is the rotary cutter and the mats that go with them, you can really turn out a lot of cut fabric in a very short time.

Rotary cutters rock!!!

Especially for those of us with bad hands!

I can cut all my blocks for a full or queen sized quilt in just a couple of hours. If I tried to use scissors,I don't think I'd be able to get them all cut at all.

Yes the precut kits are MUCH MUCH more exspensive than cutting your own blocks.

I can't figure out how to cut with a rotary cutter. It looks so simple when I watch it done on TV but when I tried it at home a few year back all I did way ruin about a quarter yard of nice fabric.
As for the precut squares, they are 100% cotton, and only $14 for 300 of them. Since I've got the two girls to watch it will be better for me to start out this way than trying to keep them out of my supplies. Not only that but the only place I have to cut fabric would be on my bed or the living room floor as we don't own a table.
