Crocheting rag rugs, questions

I would like to try crocheting a rag rug. I can't crochet per se, but I believe I can still make a plain chain stitch. (I do knit, however). I once tried to make a braided rug and it was a flop.

I saw a crochet rag rug kit in a magazine for 30$, kind of pricey.

Has anyone here crocheted one and can perhaps give me suggestions, or can anyone direct me to a website that gives clear, illustrated directions? I tried googling and all I could come up with was the kind of directions that read "Ch2, go in the top stitch and Ch3" and etc., and I don't understand those directions. I need illustrations.

My grandma used to make them all the time.

All she did was a plain chain stitch as well.I wish I knew how to make them,but sorry,I'm not any help.
