what should you add to the soil to grow corn where it was grown in the same place a year or two before?

Well-aged manure or compost should do it. *If you plant peas or beans the year before, they will contribute nitrogen to the ground, which is necessary for corn. *You can plant peas/beans as a companion plant, or you can grow them in the fall, after the corn is harvested (depending on what zone you are in and length of your growing season).

My corn planter had fertilizer bins that distributed 12-12-12 as it planted corn.

Growing the same crop in the same place year after year makes it easier for bad bugs and diseases take hold.

If you're going to do that anyway, from http://www.gardenguides.com/how-to/tipstechniques/vegetables/vcomp.asp here are companion plants to grow with the corn.

Corn
Good Companions - Bush Beans, Pole Beans, Cucumber, Melons, Peas, Squash

Bad Companion - Tomatos

have to agree with Wolf Brother. I was taught not to grow the same crop in the same ground twice, and if you remove a tree to not plant the same kind of tree in the same spot. Talking about fruit trees here.
