I'm dreaming of buying my first tractor. Seems like good deals may be possible with an old Ford 8n or the like. My land is quite hilly, and I would not be comfortable mowing without a roll over protection system in place. Do they sell such to be added to older tractors? If so, are they welded on? Tell me what you know. Thanks,

I would suppose you could add most anything on one of the old Fords.
Just be aware:
They aren't 4 wheel drive. (handy on hills).
Make sure they have the proper transmission, some are too low/high for mowing.
Make sure that the PTO has the proper adaptor, (older one is too small).
Check and see if PTO is "live", (mower keeps running when in gear), or clutched.
Yeah, I know you will hear people tell you that the do everything, with their Fords, but you should look into a newer, w/full hydraulic, 4 wheel drive and the roll bar.
They (The old Fords) are "cool", but do you want to work on it, or use it.
I'm a tractor guy, and i have several tractors newer and old....
For the most part i agree with what "hunter" has said about the old fords... I sold mine last spring... The same can be said for many other old tractors too, not just the fords.
The biggest problem with them is the lack of live power and live hydraulics and also a transmission with a much too fast first gear. In fact most older tractors have a tranny geared too fast in first gear.
As for buying a tractor, you REALLY need to list exactly what you plan to use it for, and then buy the right one the first time! Of course, some folks just "want a tractor" and most anyone will do for that...
As for the ROPS... They bolt on, and any decent welding shop can make one up and bolt it on. It needs to bolt on the axle tubes, NOT a fender or body part...
