I was looking at a small spice jar of poppy seed today. $4.48. So I put it back. I can't believe it. at that price a pound of poppy seeds must cost 50 dollars. Now the seed catalogs that have been rolling in the last couple of weeks do not have poppy seed. When we traveled in the Czech republic it seemed every house had a poppy patch and the poppy pastries were really good too. Anybody grow poppies in their garden? Do you think the seeds are viable? they were Mc Cormick. Anybody tried growing things like that from a jar?

Never tried it,but I would think that it's probably been treated with something to keep it from srpouting/spoiling......
I buy all my spices in bulk at the natural food store......try looking online too for spice suppliers........ :)

thanks Zebra, hmm, przemko sure sounds Czech. The flowers are supposed to be whitish purplish, not red.
I brought oodles of spices from Germany, lots cheaper there and much easier to get natural things. I used to buy poppy seed by the pound. well, thanks again, will check it out.

Any opium poppy seeds papaver somniferum can be used for breadmaking, etc. There are several different colors and pod sizes available.
Ziar is a large variety specifically bred for it's seed quality. It has closed vents to help retain the seed.
Fedco sells it...
