View Full Version : What was the EASIEST vegetables you ever raised?

For me, it was pumpkins. They grew over EVERYTHING, including the rest of the garden!

I watered them but I never weeded them: I didn't see the point!

The squash bugs EVENTUALLY killed them (I did no pest control EITHER!), but I still got 7 large pumpkins and a lot of squash-sized ones out of the row.

Next year I will NOT plant them where there are helpless watermelon vines and corn stalks to pick on! They will have their OWN garden!

What about you folk? What was your OWN easiest vegetable EVER? ;D And, what did you do that MADE them easy? ;D

The easiest veg I ever grew were potatoes & green beans. I was working graveyard at the time & could only get over to mom' s occassionally. They did really in spite of that. Put quite abit up for that winter.

Okra, cukes, and squash, any variety. Every time... oh, and peppers too.

What made them easy for you?

MOST gardens have to be weeded and watered, and this is where most of the work is! The pumpkins were easy because I never weeded, but I cannot IMAGINE not weeding, for instance, peppers! :o

In fact, peppers are a fiddly crop, here. What made them easy for you?

Zucchini,
I swear, this will grow in the cracks of your concrete drive way!
Have to leave them at the neighbors door-step after dark.
Pumpkins not far behind.

To be honest Terri I have no clue. All I know is that I can put a pepper plant in the ground, and voila! I am usually overran by them... I am still getting bell peppers and jalapenos like crazy.... the only reason I'm not getting banana peppers is because I disked up the plants! ;)

And yes, I weeded.... up until NOW... and guess what? They seem to do better with the weeds growing around them... go figure. :-/

Hey Guys;Peppers are indigenous to the tropics. If your growing season is similar to the tropics then peppers will grow great in your area with the least amount of care.
Also Pepper Plants are members of the nightshade family and respond well when their roots are shaded.-

Easiest crop? Hot peppers....have them coming out my ears right now!In planters and in the garden, they grow anywhere I put them.

Also the lemon squash(summer squash) I didn't have to do night time door step visits, but did have about that many!

How come no one left me any Zuchinni? I even have a basket on the corner of my porch! :)

Zebraman, I'm in Zone 7... so yeah, I guess that kinda explains the peppers... lol.

Leera... if I'd have known you wanted Zukes... I'd have left ya some before I disked 'em up... *oops*

I take it you mean ever, not this year. I used to live in a different climate with very few bugs and things that did not need hot weather did very well, but the Zucchini beat everything. we used to feed them to the sheep, I gave one that weighed around 15 pounds to a neighbor for a lark, we were always sort of in competition, and they ate the whole thing.

well Terri, you took the words right out of my mouth, pumpkins. Zucchini do not grow for me here at all. Onions and potatoes always were easy too.

Butternut Squash!!! I "really" don't even plant them. I leave the last one in a pail in the cellar and by planting time it's pretty much rotted. I take the pail out in the garden where i'd like some squash, and dump the pail.

Next time i rototill "that" spot it's soon full of squash plants that i let who ever wants, take some!! Below is what happens to the rest of them!!

Tomatoes grow well for me. I have them popping out of the compost pile all the time.
