You mean to remove the outer hulls that have the black stain in them? Or crack the inner nuts to remove the edible part?

*What kind of walnuts? *American blacks? *OR the european soft shells like you buy in the store??

*I don't think that nut cracker in the other post will work on american blk. walnuts as it appears to be designed for pecans...

*I use a vise that dad mounted on the wall in the garage to crack the american blacks. *It's been there since i was a kid... *You said "machine", so it sounds to me like you want some speed!! *A vise isn't that!

Anyway, "cracking" and "dehulling" are two different things....

Watched one work at a farm in Missouri, old guy built it .

Basically it was two tires, bolted on a frame, above each other, one driven by a tractor w/belt.

Both tires were bald, and low air pressure, so they sorta squished together.

Nuts were fed into the tires by a trough, then they went between the tires, cracking them.

Then they fell into a screen and bucket.

Though it was pretty cool at the time, sorta wished I would have paid more attention as I do have a lot of black walnuts at "The Place".

If you mean dehulling (taking the green outside off of the the walnut), I know of 2 ways that work pretty well. The first is to lay them in your driveway, and drive back and forth over them until the hulls break and become easy to remove. My mother swears by this method.

My husband has used an old corn sheller. I'm not sure if he had to make any adjustments to the sheller, in order for this to work.

I was told to use an old corn sheller for this, but the guy said it was for cracking them open, not removing the green part.
