ok for all you corn farmers out there. what kind of yeild can you typically get from an acre of feed corn in pounds or whatever. i am seriously considering applying for a land grant from the crown and feed corn seems to be a good plan as there is a drive on to make this province selfsufficient in feed for the dairy industry especially. so what kind of yeild do you get in fertile soil and adverage growing conditions.

also, just to show how green i am, what is the minimal equipment that i will need, like tractor etc.

thanks

A good average round number for corn in the US is about 125 to 130 bushels to the acre. Depending on how large the operation will be, you'll need a tractor of some size, cultivators, planter and you have to harvest somehow.. Hiring out some of those jobs works for some farmers, depending on the scale of your operation. Will the corn be shelled or chopped for silage?
Have you considered oats? Cheaper by far to grow and you get straw as another product that sells well.

hey smoky

just in the start of the thinking right now. the drive seems to be on for feed corn for the dairy industry as the cost of imported feed is through the roof as we are and island and historically looked to the sea but now the land is where some of the future seems to be. im just trying to learn right now as i never grew corn or even worked on a farm before. let the adventure commence i guess. lol ;D

Do you know how many degree days you got going there? Average/expected rainfall?
Have you decided if you'll be Organic or conventional?
Do you have the pesky Corn Borer?
What is your "Plan B" if the market shifts while the corn is growing?
Good luck with it, man. You're smart to do your research beforehand.
You need a soil test as soon as possible.
