Wide mouth or regular, which do you prefer and why?
This will be my first year of canning foods other than pickles,in which I used the wide mouth pint jars for the ease of packing the cucumbers. Is it just personal preference, or are thier reasons or specific uses for wide vs regular? Thanks

I use both regularly. Wide-mouth are good for items that may be difficult going in or out of the jar, like pickles, meats, etc., and sometimes you like the regular jar because it will help keep food in the jar.

Then of course it can be just what I happen to grab from the stack. :)

I prefer the wide mouth ones because it allows me to get my hand inside to wash them out. It does make packing easier too. :D

I like wide mouth for packing , but am going with regular(small mouth) for any new jars bought this year. Because regular lids are 1.29$ and wide mouth are 2.99$ to 3.59$ here.I can put more regular mouth jars in the canner at a time to. For washing jars on small mouth I use a louffa on a handle, lasts longer than a baby bottle brush.

very compelling reasons Thyme.

as for washing them, I have posted this before and may do so again next year, God willing, but the fastest and easiest way to wash jars is to get one of those glass washers that they use in bars. Mine has two brushes sticking up, the gizmo fits perfectly into a five gallon bucket and washing jars goes fast, I wash two at a time and have another bucket for rinsing. ( since I do a lot of my canning on the back porch).

I just found out they were a plant.
I thought they were a type of sponge. ::)

No, not a sponge. It is a type of gourd, sort of similar to a straight eight cucumber on steroids. LOL You leave them on the vine until ripe, peel them, shake out the seeds, and you have your "sponge". I use them for my jars as well as one in each area for cleaning. I use one for dishes, one in the bathroom, etc. They are handy.

I like wide mouth for all the reasons above, and buy the lids by the case.
PaulNKS,
How long do the louffa last & when are they ripe? Growing them for the first time this year. Thanks Sissy
