I had a food saver vacuum sealer and was not happy with it. I don't know what the problem was but it never got all the air out before it sealed. It drove me crazy. I finally got rid of it but need another one.

Is there a particular vacuum sealer you would recommend?

Sorry, but I can ONLY recommend the FoodSaver. I will assume that your original one was fairly old or there may have been some blockage in the vacuum trough to prevent it from working properly. I've never had any problems with the new units. The one I have now is the V3840 (vertical) and I love it.

Yesssss I LOVE my FoodSaver. But I ALso love my Reynolds hand held battery operated vacuum sealer... for things in the fridge...

I can buy a block of cheese, portion it, then seal each one keeping them fresh until they are each used up. You see, the bags are made like regular food storage bags with a zippy at the top. You can either zip it or each time and / or vacuum it to keep the contents fresher. (Is it me or do I sound like a commercial here?) My food is staying alot more desirable for a longer period of time due to this nifty lil invention. Cheese, fruit, cold meats... everything keeps so well in this bag system and the vacuum unit stores well in my drawer beside the fridge...

As far as freezing in the Reynolds bags, they work great. Remember, tho, that this is not the same Quality as the FoodSaver... I use the Reynolds one to freeze meat in the freezer above the fridge for short term storage. But all other meat for the freezer definately goes into the FoodSaver bags... I hope this helps ya...

My foodSaver was about 5 or 6 years old but never worked right from day one. (I bought it new) I have read good reviews on FS so maybe I just got a faulty one.

I just bought a Seal a Meal but my understanding is that the Foodsavers have more OOMPH to the suction. The Seal A Meal has worked wonderfully for my needs (less that 1 yr dry storage) so far and the price is probably half that of the Foodsaver.

I just now saw this post.

I had an original FoodSaver, and did have problems with as well,it was tempermental, and everythign had to be just right, otherwise it would not seal properly.

I replaced it with a FoodSaver Game Saver Turbo plus......and I am very happy with the performace of it so far, have had it for about a year now.

I have went through 5 different food saver VS over the past 3 years.
I finally went and bought the Cabela's Commercial VS for about $400 I use it 3-5 times a week, just finished 250 ears of corn without a miss.
Also processed a 350 lb black bear with steaks, burger the works, and I have not once had a hiccup.

Good luck.

We also have gone through a number of el-cheapo vacuum sealers before biting the bullet and buying Cabelas top model. Hubbest uses it several times a week to vacuum seal game, cheese, leftovers, bread kits, clothing for hunting (keeps 'em dry and saves space)...just about anything you can think of. It's a very versatile piece of equipment. Have had nothing but exemplary service from it. Buy the best; it's worth every penny.

I have a Foodsaver and use it all the time without any problems. I bought the canning jar lid sealers for it (large and small mouth) and use it that way a lot too. But like RedneckVeteran, I love my Pump-n-seal. I don't use it for plastic bags, but I use every kind of jar with a lid for dry storage.
