The tone of this article is a bit alarmist, and it missed the opportunity for safe canning education:

The problem is that a recent study showed that 44% of people getting involved in canning foods were not interested in following safe canning education. THAT is what is truly scary.
For whatever reason, people think they can process green bean and similar vegetables in a Boiling Water Canner, or no processing at all, just heat to a boil, place in a 'sterile' jar and put a lid on it.
In reference to the news article, I'm relieved there were no deaths. Botulism poisoning is serious business.

I'm relieved there were not death's either. The children's aversion to green beans served them well, maybe? I'm getting ready go PRESSURE can asparagus next month and I'm going to be extra careful after reading this.

I would never put my family or friends' health at risk.......I always follow proper canning guidelines as published by Ball.......A little short cut here and there could cost someone their life.
It's really scary that anyone would not follow directions or take shortcuts and put lives at risk........
