together? Has anybody ever done this? I love new potatoes and creamed peas. Has anybody ever canned baby potatoes and peas together so that all you have to do is open the jar and make your cream sauce? I know that you couldn't can them with the cream sauce on them, but how bought just raw packing potatoes and peas together? Would you have to process the potatoes so long that the peas would be mush? Thanks in advance ;)

Sarah I have never canned them together but would opt for canning them separate so I would have more menu options. I am also thinking there may be a difference in processing times.
Just a thought.

Hi Stella,
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking of canning them together cause if you can them seperate it sure takes ALOT of peas to fill a jar ;) Tee hee........ ;D

I couldn't find any recipes for canning peas and potatoes together, which usually means it's not advised. Rule #1 in canning - only use tested, up-to-date recipes.

Ok, by doing some online searching, I was able to find this...
"Other canning that Mom did was from the garden, especially green beans, corn, tomatoes, potatoes and peas. The young potatoes and peas canned together were a treat that can't be had unless you grow your own. "
That is a quote from http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~kscomanc/foodstorage.html
So anyway, at some point, somewhere, it has been done. I'm off to do more sleuthing.

I'm also noticing that there is only a 10 minute difference in processing times for peas and potatoes.......so.........I may just try it this summer, processing for the recommended time for potatoes (35 min) and see how things go. I've been canning for years and I'm not afraid to try and see what happens. Thanks for the responses! ;)

Please let us know how it goes. I love salad peas canned and if I canned them with potatoes it would be another option for a convenient quick meal for 2.
Good luck.

I love fresh peas and potatoes creamed together - major yummy!! I would freeze the peas and either can or store the potatoes. Canned peas do not approximate fresh. Not even close. Like two different veggies altogether. I like commerically canned baby peas but I prefer frozen. I always freeze from my garden and buy commercial canned petite or baby peas from Aldis. I never manage to grow enough to get us thru the year.

Hi Stella, I'll let you know how it goes! :D
Hey there I'm an Aldi girl all the way! My mom shopped there and that's the only place that I shop! ;D

I'm curious what book you are reading that has a 10 minute difference in processing time between potatoes and peas. In my books it is 40 minutes for peas and 35 minutes for potatoes at 10# pressure (sea level).
Because of the similarity in times I see no reason why they could not be done together at the longer time.

Hi CanNerd!
You are correct in it being 35 and 40 minutes. I was searching for info on canning them together and the site that I saw had a 10 min difference. I checked my Kerr home canning book and it has the correct times. Thanks! Now I'm anxious for spring peas! ;)

goodwifefarm -
Creamed peas and new potatoes is my favorite comfort food! I may try this also this year.
When I make the white sauce, I like to mince some onion finely, cook it lightly in the butter, add the flour & stir with a wooden spoon to make the roux - then add milk & thicken. The last thing is a shake or two from the Italian seasoning bottle - that stuff is GREAT in this dish!
That same white sauce is also very good over fresh asparagus . . . can't wait for spring! :)

Hi CarolAnn! That is exactly how I do my white sauce, minus the Italian. I just may try adding that this year though, it sounds yummy! ;D
Come on spring!!

maybe you can arrange a shelf for a quart of potatoes with a pint or half pint of peas next to them in sets.. i did this for some chicken dishes... a can of wasabi ginger salad dressing with a small can of pineapple juice (individual serving) next to it with a rubber band for baking chicken breasts with... pair them off
