I've got a couple of HUGE jugs of unopened cooking oil and 3 pretty large containers of vegetable shortening. Does anyone know how to can them up into smaller containers? (jars). Do you BWB or PC and for how long? I'm afraid once I open them that they will go rancid before I can use them all up they are so big, and I do NOT have a spare inch of freezer space.
Thanks for any help you can give!

I've never heard of recanning oil or shortening. I would think vacuum sealing into a new jar would work???

okay, help me out here. I've never done vacumn saving except for a VERY VERY old "seal a meal" my mom had waaaay back when. Can you use regular mason jar lids and jars to seal the food? I just keep seeing plastic canisters advertised when I search on EBay. A couple say wide mouth mason jar sealer, but I am kinda confused....AND coffee deprived!

Hmm - I don't have a full food saver, BUT I do know that the food saver brand sealers do come with optional tops for mason jars so you can apply a vacuum seal to them. So I do think you have to have the special lids that go with this system. I think food saver (and otheres) also sell separate canisters (maybe the ones you are seeing on ebay) for use with their systems.

I know there are other forum members who have this full set up, so hopefully they'll chime in on this one!

I dont know if this will help or not but when I use oil to fry sometime I will strain and drain it hot into a clean canning jar. When I put the lid and band on it, it will seal and remain good for quite a while. I am not saying that this is "canning" but this is how I save my oil. If I had a large container to store I would probably get it very hot and put in clean hot jars and cap. But thats just me.
Just my thoughts.

I have the foodsaver and the canisters that go with it. *I also purchased the sealers for sealing in fruit jars. *I have the wide mouth and the regular size.

Everything that I have dehydrated I have put into fruit jars, mostly the half pint size and sealed with my foodsaver.

I also have half gallon size jars that I use for flour, sugar, dry milk powder, or anything that is dry that I seal with the foodsaver.

You use regular and wide mouth canning lids for all of this.

Please tell us (me) about the cream separator - or better yet, maybe start a new thread? I'd like to hear about them.

Pat

I just bought one brand new on EBay last night (after checking out used ones online and at auctions), and hope it will get here soon. It will supposedly do both cow and goat milk, is electric, and will handle 13 gals/hour. Here is the link to the one I bought - he has several others for sale. I've been researching them for awhile, so I HOPE I bought a good one! ??? If not, I've made a very expensive mistake at a time when I can ill afford to waste money!
