I've just updated my site on frugal living and self-reliance to address the use of cold frames. Here is a new page about building a cold frame as an alternative to a full greenhouse. They are useful for starting seeds as well as growing vegetables year round.

The link is: http://www.frugal-living-freedom.com/building-a-cold-frame.html

We are using clear poly row covers (a cheap version of a cold frame) to keep vegetables ready to harvest year round. It is amazing, we have had minus 14 and our turnips, lettuce, and Swiss chard are still doing fine.

Next year I am going to go full bore with row covers and cold frames so we have a robust offering of vegetables throughout the entire year.

If you're interested in winter vegetable gardening, here is another link you should see: http://www.frugal-living-freedom.com/winter-vegetables.html

Here's to all my brave winter vegetable gardening friends out there,

Clair

Thanks for the links! I've been thinking of moving to Goshen County, just north of you. Hopefully I'll be able to use a lot of your info in building my homestead. 8)
