Has anyone out there ever actually used waterglass (liquid sodium silicate) to preserve eggs? I've heard of it before in Carla Emery's books, and now I see that Lehman's carries it. Any input on pros/cons of it?

My grandmother did it for years (she's 97 now). I don't remember much about it except that her and my Grandfather loved them.
I do recall that when she opened the jar, my sister and I would hold our noses.

We always did this. It worked great and I do not remember any smell. before waterglass mother used hydrated lime, but I do not know the ratio of water to lime. It worked just as well. she had a couple of crocks for the eggs and they were stored in the cellar. this cellar had a door to the outside.
Once, in 1956, we were digging potatoes and my little brother went missing. we searched frantically, until my granmother carried a basket of potatoes into the cellar. there was my little brother, covered with eggyolk from top to bottom, an egg in each hand and banging them together. :P I think there were mixed emotions involved there.

As the mother of grown sons, I can actually see that happening! ;D Mine decided when they were little to rappel down the basement stairs in a clothesbasket held with knitting yarn. They were soooo quiet that I didn't know they were doing it, until I guess the yarn broke and the basket went clunk clunk clunk down the stairs, with the youngest wailing at the top of his lungs in fear! The older one was saying (guess they didn't realize that sound travels) "SHUT UP, MOM WILL HEAR, SHUT UP, YOU'RE FINE, SHUT UP!" Ah yes, the joys of youth! They lived through it fine, and I've gone gray!
