the first thing is to drain the carb and fuel frome the tank their is a small nut on most all smallengine carbs turn it out 2 or 3 turns drain all the fuel most fuel is only good for 30 days then it starts to varnish and water also settles if their is any in the fuel

second go ahead and change the oil and service the equip blades lube and check you belts and guides for wear if it has them

three take a little wd 40 and spray down the cylinder this will help the life of the rings and cylinder this helps keep moisture out of the cylinder so when you first start it out of storage the rings and cylinder are not rusty or even worse stuck

if these steps are followed you should have no problems frome you mowers splitters and generators when they are needed after hibernation i am a certified small engine mechanic yall can contact me on here with any questions you have ;D
