Does anyone know where to get cans for it? I'm not going to use it for home canning food, but was thinking it might be a good way to store dry goods airtight.....

But hey the can sealer was free.......

Good find, Leera!

Walton Feed ( www.waltonfeed.com) sells 448 #10 cans with lids (one pallet) for $407.00.

The first thing to determine, however, is what size of cans does your sealer seal? There are different heads for all different diameters of cans: #10 cans are great for food storage and are pretty well the industry standard for this purpose as well as commercial and institutional canning.

You may, if you indeed have a canner for #10 cans, contact the nearest LDS (mormon) church and get in touch with their canning committee, or locate their cannery. They can tell you so much more about this.

Canners also need to be fine tuned to make a good airtight seal. Perhaps after determining can size, you could get a few from the mormon cannery to experiment with before investing in a pallet of cans. One sure way, of course, is to can some crackers, in two cans. Immerse one in water for a day, place one outside in the humidity for a week. Open each and see if the crackers are dry, edible, and not stale. If they pass the test, you are ready to go, and I envy you! No better way to store dry goods than #10 cans, in my humble opinion! You can also buy a pack of oxygen absorbers (usually a gross at a time) to place one or two in each can to remove the residual oxygen. They look like those little packets you find in electronics, or even the packets in packages of pepperoni. They are iron filings and moisture. In the presence of oxygen, the filings rust, which uses up the oxygen. You have to keep sealing your unused packets, though, with a vacuum sealer, or they all "rust" in the open air and are useless.

Hope this helps!!!
