View Full Version : Dried Peaches
I just opened my first can of dried peaches and they are black. They smell fine but I question the color. Are they any good?

They probably weren't treated with sulfur dioxide, which aids in keeping the color bright, as well as extending shelf-life. *Some of us are allergic to the sulfur, so unsulfured is good - just not so good looking.
Check out the picture of dried peaches at this web site and see how dark theirs are... (scroll down nearly to the bottom of the page)

Modified to add: as long as they don't have mold growing on them, they are "normal" for unsulfured dried peaches. Mold on dried foods means you toss it.
Thanks. I hated the thought of throwing them away but mine look like the picture of unsulphured.

If you dont want to add sulphur to your dried foods and dont want them to turn black, try soaking in water and lemon juice, or crush a couple of those horse sized vitamin C tabs and add to a quart of water to soak your fruit in. The ascorbic acid is far more healthy for you and will keep the color bright. While I am on my soapbox about unhealthy additives such as sulphur, I asked my favorite grocer if they redden their meat with carbon monoxide. He turned redder than the meat and admitted that they did, but he doesnt buy any enhanced meat for his own family!
