There are recipes available, as well as a cookbook(s) about using MREs. *I watched a competition where professional cooks made "miracle" dishes out of MREs.

I don't remember what my son said was the worst, but he LOVED the Jambalaya....doesn't help that it's his favorite food anyway, plus they include a bottle of tabasco sauce in the bag.

8Kids, and anyone else that thinks the present day MRE's are bad. I can help that situation. See if you can find an old Veteran that ate the "C rations", or even worse "K rations", and ask him. He will tell you this.I have many times gone a day or even into two days, with no real food to get hungry enough to eat them. I've seen GI's scrape half of them on the ground, and cut up an onion to fill the can back up again before eating it. Huge gobs of pure fat, when they were cold, gristle, and sometimes worse. I have seen troops throw up trying to get them down. They were bad, and some worse than others. I have tried most of the MRE's and every one I have tried has been very tasty, and a few were really good, and the best part of all is the heaters that really work. A treat to us in the Bavarian alps was a trip back to headquarters for a "hot meal"maybe once a week, which was a couple of cans of the same stuff, heated up in a garbage can with an imersion heater.
They ain't mamma's cookin, but they ain't that bad, especially if you are hungry, and when the SHTF, you will be hungry. There are several civilian survival meals for hunters, backpacker, mountain climbers, that are also good, but not really that much different, and not that much better, with no butt ribbon, matches, gum, candy, or cute little surprises, no crackers, or jelly, or p nut butter, no drink. MRE's are hard to beat, you can trust an old soldier whose been there.

Am I the only person out there who actully liked most of the C-rations I ate?
I'm debating on picking up some of the MRE's at the army surplus near Ft. Sam, they have them for $5.95 each, to try them out and see if I want to put some away for a BOB.

2500 calories of sheer brilliance! (i prefer the Wornick brand, though they seem to have dropped the Tabasco....). Hot beverage, cold beverage, TP, matches....you really can't go wrong, though I opened one that had gone over recently, and that was not too pretty....

A couple of years ago, right around Hanukkah (December right before Christmas) our refrigerator/freezer gave up the ghost. There was a new appliance store opening up on January 1 with no interest financing for 2 years. My parents thought we had lost our minds, but for two weeks we ate our MREs and our SHTF stash. We ate the MREs first. They were not that bad, but we did gain a few pounds eating those. I prefer the spaghetti with sauce the best. BTW, it's amazing what you can do with Ramen noodles!

We keep a few cases around at work in case the SHTF. They keep longer in a cool place...as opposed to the trunk of the car. Once they get over a year old it's time to use them before they start going bad. I take a few fishing with me. They surely do beat going hungry. I've opened a few bad ones but I have never seen the pound cake go bad. And, if you don't like the pound cake you could probably pave your driveway with them!

I too enjoyed the old c rations, even the egss and ham,I liked about all of them. As far as the mre's go I think most of them are ok. I like the Jambalya and the chili mac.I havent tried out the vegaterian ones as they dont sound too good to me. I get mine free from a couple of friends in the Guard dont know if I would pay much for them. The acessorie pack is like a small survival kit in itself and they dont take up much room. I have bought some of the entres from ebay, a wharehouse that had the sprinkle system go off, the boxes were a little water damaged but the product inside werefine. I got what I thought was a really good deal on them and have piut some in my bob.

While on the road, one September I ran into a preacher. I got to know him pretty good. he told me when he was travelling on a bus long distance, he ate mre`s exclusively because something in them prevented you from having to go... on a long bus trip it was an issue. That`s what he told me. I will not eat mre`s. These things are made in accordance to Uncle Sam`s guidelines- the same uncle that wants to take your guns away. Think about it. What else is in those things? Something to make you obey orders? Excessive fluoride, maybe?

Don't know how I missed this thread, guess because it was an oldie...
I got a bunch of MRE's after the hurricane. Took one case to church for Full Sack Sunday and kept three cases. I have only had three meals, so I dont know what they are all like.
The BEST was the 'vegetarian manicotti'. The marinara sauce really was good.
The WORST was labled 'chicken and dressing' or 'chicken and stuffing', don't recall which. The chicken patty was just dry, and the 'dressing' had the strangest texture, even when heated. It was very much rubbery and had a plastic taste to it.
Gosh, I don't remember what the third one was...
The bread is really nice. At 180 cal./slice it was kind of worrisome, but I liked the taste and texture of it. I've had the vegetable flavored crackers and the plain ones, and both were good. The peanut butter is really good, it's a lot better than Jif from a jar. The jalapeno spread is pretty good, I don't eat that much cheese at one time so I saved the two packets and used them on nachos. The brownie was so-so, but the marble pound cake tasted horrible--I HATE fake tasting cake, tasted more like artificial flavoring than cake. It was just awful. I gave it to the hens.
I took the little bottles of tabasco sauce out of the little bag (don't like tabasco) and put the little napkin/tp/gum things in my purse. Never know when you need to blow your nose or want some gum.
I did notice that they disrupted my.....uhmmm.....regularity? *That's a no-no. I have to have regularity, regularly. I would not want a steady diet of them because they don't come with Ex-lax...

Don't know why but I love the cheese and crackers out of them! *:o
Yes the cheese, It's so good. I don't know exactly what kind of cheese it is. I've never really tasted anything like it. I used to trade off other things for cheese packets.
I used to be a big fan of the beef stew, but now I go for the chilli with mac.

Noticed some people mentioned, uhh, irregularity after eating mre's. That's because they have reduced moisture to help in preservation. Just chew the gum afterward, it contains a laxative. :o
