I would like to have a recipe for individual type fried pies. My grandmother used to make some apple fried pies but after she passed, my grandfather lost the recipe. Anyone have a recipe?

Hillbillygal,

I don't have any specific recipe, but you don't really need one unless you need help with a particular filling.
You can use any recipe for pie crust or tortillas for the crust.
You can use canned pie filling or homemade for the filling.
Make your dough into a walnut to golfball sized ball depending on how big you want your pie. Roll into a circle. Place a Tablespoon or two (depending again on the size of your pie) of filling on one half of the circle not too close to the edge.
Fold your other side over the top to make a half moon.
Crimp the open ends together with a fork.
Fry in hot fat till each side is golden brown.
Drain on paper towels.
Roll in granulated sugar if desired.

This is also a great way to give new life to leftover meats or shepherds pie. Just don't roll it in sugar :P

I don't make very good apple pie filling...so if you need an actual recipe for that then we'll have to wait for someone else to answer.
Have fun!

Thank you both for the responses. I am going to try to make my own pies hopefully in the next couple of weeks when I can afford to buy some extra ingredients. I'll let you know how it turns out. I'd really like to can some apple pie filling. Tripper you made it sound very good.

Hillbillygal,

Could you keep us posted? Like you, our recipe was lost when someone passed away.

We have done some experimenting and found that using lard is a must to even get close to the taste we remember Grandma Blues pies having.

We only got them once year as she made them for the hunting parties. That could be part of why they tasted so good... we have usually just hiked out of some canyon with a load!

Best regards,
HD

This is kind of beside the point, but it sounds fun and has to do with fried pies.
I read a book last year ( I can't even remember the name of it) that took place in the "olden days". The family the book was about made what they called "Jonahs" when they made fried pies. All the pies were wonderful except for one which would have something really awful inside. One instance was cayenne pepper mixed all up with something else. Whoever had the misfortune to get the Jonah pie had to sit under the table and be everyone's footstool until the second round of pies.
The premise sounds like a lot of fun and could be adapted to other things. :D

I just use flour tortillas and any pie filling I have on hand.......put the filling in,roll it up like a burrito and place in a skillet, open folds facing down first,in enough hot oil to come about half way up the side of the pies........fry a minute or two, flip, fry another minute or two until both sides are brown and crispy, and that's it........take out, place on paper towel, dust with powdered sugar.........
