I am making this recipe as I type so I can't say how well it turns out but the reviews on the site seem positive. *I didn't have sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, or the wheat germ so I winged it a little. *I added mixed nuts instead of peanuts and also added about 1/3 cup of rice crispies.

P.S. I have finished it and it did come out very well. I forgot to set the timer for the last ten minutes so it had a stronger roasted flavor than it probably should have. The kids loved it with a little milk on it and warm from the oven. My wife also liked it although she doesn't eat raisins so I had hand pick her sample. I think I'll try making some granola bars by compressing the mixture in a pan and allowing it to cool.

Hi MadTripper :-)
I rarely buy cold cereal anymore since I read about an experiment between three mice. One got mouse chow, one got cornflakes and one got the empty cornflake box. The mouse eating mouse chow, of course, did just fine forever, however, the the cornflake mouse died in just one week. The box mouse lived for TWO weeks. Sounds like the cornflakes actually KILLED the poor mouse!
That story is in Sally Fallon's book Nourshing Traditions.
Granola is one of those dishes like beans or rice.....you can make it as easy or complicated as you want but it's a great staple. That's awesome that you're doing that for your family.
I'll post my grapenuts recipe for you in case you want to try it next.

We've made it quite a few times now. I took some skiing last night and a few friends tried it and loved it. I had some more when I got home as well.

Hmm, I'm not sure about the oatmeal question. I specifically bought Quaker Old Fashioned oats as opposed to the quick cook.
The rice crispies add a nice texture and the results are a trailmix. When you pull it out of the oven, you stir it some more and then let it sit. If you pressed it in the pan after cooling a few minutes you could cut it into bars or squares. I continue to "fluff" it until its cool enough for storage in a bag.
My wife has been mixing some m&m's into it for the kids however they like it fine without them. We fly through a batch in two days or so. I'll make more this weekend but I need to get some additional ingredients as I'm about out of some items.

This would be a candidate for dried fruit. We have dried cherrys - they look like big raisins, but still taste like cherry. Mebbe apple - will have to think about what else could be dried. Want to try penuts this year too - supposed to be easy to grow in the garden. Mebbe cranberries - they dry nicely too... blueberries... You can buy hulled sunflower at a feed store, but don't know that I'd want to eat it - have no idea how to hull large amounts of sunflower seed at home...

Pat

I have another recipe I use that has peanut butter and corn syrup in the recipe. That recipe is pressed into bars by greasing a pyrex pan, placing the hot mixture into it, and pressing down with waxed paper. I would think that the consistency of the granola recipe I originally posted would allow you to do the same. Perhaps a combination of corn syrup or molasses would help things.

No-bake Granola Bars
2 ½ cups crisp rice cereal (a.k.a. Rice Krispies)
2 cups quick cooking oatmeal
½ cup raisins
½ cup firmly packed brown sugar
½ cup honey
½ cup peanut butter
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
½ cup choc morsels (optional)
Combine first 3 ingredients in a large bowl; set aside
Bring brown sugar and honey to a boil in a small pan
over medium high heat, stirring constantly; remove from heat.
Stir in peanut butter and vanilla until blended.
Pour peanut mixture over cereal mixture, stirring
until coated. Press into 13x9 buttered pan & cool.
Cut into bars
You may add substitute corn syrup for honey but IMO it’s not as good
or holds together as well. You may also add dried fruit, coconut, nuts, wheat germ or morsels of your choice (or not) If adding morsels, cool mixture for a while so you don’t melt them.
I add wheat germ usually 1/4 cup or more ( decrease oatmeal in proportion or too dry).
I usually add nuts instead of raisins and use semi-sweet chips. But butterscotch chips are good too. A daughter uses dried fruit. Keep total additions to one cup (as in ½ cup nuts & ½ cup raisins or whatever). Press HARD into a pan. The back of a spatula (pancake turner) works well.

Here is another I've used for a long time. They are really dense and taste great. The recipe is similar to the previous posted.
Actually, now that I compare the two, they are almost identical. Mine has peanuts instead of raisins but other than that, about the same.
