A tulikivi is really nothing different than a masonry heater. Both heaters are much more labor intensive than a stove installation hence more expensive.

http://mha-net.org/ The website of the Masonry Heater Association has info on core units you can buy and a booklet containing plans for several heaters you can build yourself. The masonry heaters are typically 90% efficient, so would save about 1/3 of wood compared to a high efficiency wood stove. And, it does not have to be continuously fired, just 1 or 2 burns a day.

My husband and I have been looking at masonry heater plans for awhile now, because they are so efficient. The ability to include a bread oven is a bonus, since we love artisan style breads and crusty pizza. They aren't much more trouble to build really than a regular fireplace, but with so much more benefits. If you are including it in a new home build or substantial remodel, it could be combined with a geothermal system for your heating and cooling needs. Very practical, and with all the possible options for the finished look, they are lovely and will fit with any style of decor and design.

Nice looking fire places. But for the money I'll be putting in a Rocket Stove Mass heater. Easier to build (almost out tight cheap) and very efficient burn.
