I love coffee. I drink the better part of two pots a day. My wife usually has a cup from each pot, and I finish the rest. It isn't so much the caffeine, I think I got numbed to that years ago, but after a decade in the service and another 20 years plus working nights at jobs with a coffee mess, it's pretty much a part of life. There are no coffee varieties that grow here in Tennessee, so this is an item we have to purchase outside the home.

Has anybody found a substitute beverage they can produce on their home? I've heard of chicory - anyone drinking that instead? Comfrey tea? Sassafrass tea? I think it's more a matter of something to sip on throughout the day. We don't drink pop, warm or hot water doesn't appeal. I had to quit drinking 25 years ago, and coffee was the only thing I could slug down all day like booze, without getting bloated or a gross stomach.

I'd be interested to hear what your locally produced beverage of choice is. Also, maybe something that is tasty cold, like tea, for the summer? I'm not a big tea drinker, but we live in the land of sweet tea, so I have adapted.

Regards,
Pat

I don't know anything about growing it but I have had coffee that was blended with chicory...IMO it was very good. How chicory alone tastes I haven't a clue.

I have enjoyed a coffee substitute made from dandylion roots. wash and dry the roots. Grind or chop them up fine, roast in a 350^ oven stirring occasionally till they are a dark brown. Then just use them like regular coffee grounds. Keep them in a jar in the frige till you are ready to use them.

You might find some inspiration in these recipes -

Personally, I'd go to water or water with lemon because nothing BUT coffee tastes like coffee - especially if you like to drink it black.

I like Yerba Mate.
