Suzy mentioned an article in her General thread about her on-line article, so I used the link:
http://www.motherearthnews.com/Whole-Foods-and-Cooking/2007-06-01/Shocking-News-About-Meat.aspx

and found out that there is a whole lot of meat adulterated with salt water and toxic gas to make it look fresh longer.

This is ANOTHER great reason not to shop at Walmart since they're one of the worst offenders, but suspect all pre-packaged meat if your grocery store doesn't have it's own meat cutters.

I knew they load frozen turkeys with salt water, but not beef and chicken also. For those watching their sodium, this is a real bad thing and the FDA is doing NOTHING to protect us!

Oh, yeah - they're not here to protect US, they're here to protect big companies who need to get our money. >:(

so that's why.
I bought beef twice at wal mart and promised myself never again. it was odd tasting if you were not used to it.

Hi CarolAnn
The FDA does not have any jurisdiction over domestically produced meats. That is the jurisdiction of the USDA. The FDA can only check imported game meats like venison or ostrich.

But, this is just another reason not to shop at Walmart.

I don't like the way they package their meat in those deep tubs. >:( I like to look carefully at what's in the package, as best I can, before buying it.
The main complaint I have with the local chain grocery is trying to find something that isn't already seasoned! >:( I want to do my own seasoning, especially as they seem to cover it with salt and paprika, two items I seldom ever use!
I wanted a bag of chicken leg quarters the other day, at Wal-Mart, but I prefer the frozen ones where I can just take one or two out at a time and toss the bag back in the freezer. I know I can do that with theirs, but for some reason I'm just not willing. Want to cook up a couple of leg quarter, take the meat off the bones and make and freeze some Enchiladas verdes! For those who don't know they are chicken enchiladas with tomatillo sauce on them and usually melted mozzarella cheese. Make a yummy, healthy meal if you add beans and Mexican rice. :D

One reason they use those deep tubs is that they can be sealed air tight. But they don't put air in them they put CO2. It keeps the meat redder so you think it's fresher.
