Hello,

I have bought some iron cookware that has been left outside and has rusted. Is there a way to save this stuff or is it ruined? Can it be seasoned after it has rusted?

Thanks

First you need to get rid of all the rust. Then season it.

This site helped me.

Check out April 3 of Ask Jackie Online. She talks about cleaning, getting rid of surface rust and reseasoning cast iron pans.

I’ve done it. Just use some industrial strength steel wool( the kind that the restaurants use) It does take some elbow grease. Then season them real well after the rust is gone. I spray the inside down with Pam real well then burn the daylights out of it on the range(turn on the fan or you'll set of the moke detector), a light scub with an SOS pad, (to knock of the bumps) repeat as needed. Usually 2 or 3 times. Spray with Pam one last time then wipe it clean with a paper towel. I like to hang my cast iron on hooks so it dosnt get rust rings from stacking... Also I make some of the old timers cringe when I wash them with soap and water, but I always dry them well then lightly spray them with Pam then wipe them out.... When you can cook an egg in it with out butter and it dosnt stick, its seasoned well.

FFD430, it is your cookware to do with as you see fit but, I would never put pam on my cast iron. That stuff gums up on cookware every where it touchs that is not covered by the food. My cast iron is old and belonged to my Grandmother and Mother and I take good care of it. I did find a skillet that was rusted and my husband used a wire brush that goes on a drill and cleaned it off. I burned it off some in a fire and then seasoned it in the oven with lard. That was years ago and I still use that skillet. The only thing I use pam for is to spray baking pans and I don't do that very often.

After the seasoning was done, they came out looking super and worked like they should!

I do like to cook bacon the first couple times after cleaning and seasoning...
