Hey huck - just look at the left side of the screen. It looks green to me - don't know how your screen is set up. There's a section heading Forum / Chat and under that is a link Member Chat (http://www.backwoodshome.com/chat/). Just click on that link and a JAVA applet will start loading. You'll see a login screen - no password required.

Pat

flatwater is already registered for the chat room.
If he can't log in, have him use the Forum's Lost Password feature to recover his Forum login details.
If he uses those and still can't get in, have him send me an IM with the contents of the email he got so I can check the database.

Pinetreefarm,
It isn't normally moderated, but there are a couple mods that stop by to chat at times....

And there was a great silance across the land. It seems that we Americans are slowly being trained to conform to the speech boundaries as determined by whatever powers that be.
Perhaps censored speech is not an entirely bad thing...wonder when censored thoughts will be next.
As always, the usual cavaets apply.

Pine,
Of course censored speech is a bad thing. Worse, is when a twisted individual with an internet connection gets in there and starts typing filth. It was open to all before that happened - and then enough people complained so that it had to be changed.
This present change is a stop-gap measure to keep the seriously sick out of there, kind of like keeping a fence up to protect you own. It makes it harder for everyone to get in, but at least it keeps that sort out.
Admin is working on another solution that should make it harder to join the forum, so then those internal constraints can be loosened up agan.
It's too bad when the few ruin things for the many. *:-[
Edited to add -
Training folks to moderate what they say has always been a function of society - it used to be a trip to the woodshed or a relative yanking on the ear of the offender - but really, I think we're more free in our speech now than ever before. (At least, I know I've said words occasionally when driving in heavy traffic that I'm pretty sure my great granny didn't even know existed!)
;)
We walk a very thin, dangerous line in the effort to allow "free" speech, encourage free thinking, and yet keep folks from setting fire to each other with their words.

I guess my point was that mods stop by to chat but not to moderate.
About the free speech. I was always taught that it is free speech unless it tramples the rights of others.

"I was always taught that it is free speech unless it tramples the rights of others."
By its nature free speech is subject to tweaking various sensibilities, but there in is the free speech part. You get to freely express yourself. Wouldn't stopping the course of free speech because some disagree or dissent mean that there would be no free speech, only PC utterances engineered not to disagree or offend in any way ?

ok Time Out... None of this is making sense to me...
There is a statement posted, by Administration, for chat room users to read. I believe it is quite enforceable and yet with that being said, I have never seen it enforced until we had an onslaught of foolishness come to BHM... in may areas... Due to OUR cries for assistance as chat room users... Administration stepped in... and gave us a solution which ended the problem. Yes, there were some bugs in the application but... welcome to website logistics... Administration has been just super to offer assistance to resolve the issue.
I've been in this chat room for months now and no one comes in and criticizes or condemns our speech. However we DID have behavior that was not about conversation... but posting unlealthy urls and being generally disruptive. I, for one, did not appreciate someone posing as ME... saying who knows what. Others' names were used as well in this manner. One woman passed a threat to administration in that room.
I was there and heard it first hand.
In the chat room we discuss homesteading and the lives we lead... which are difficult and demanding. We find solutions and encourage one another. We are developing true bonds of friendship. To insinuate censorship is way out of line... perhaps it is because you have not joined us and do not have a clue about what goes on in the chat room...it's easy to toss these words about. The ability to censor exists, but to my knowledge is not being applied.
At times there are young ones among us in the chat room and WE make the decision to have civil and courteous discourse, it is not forced upon us.
I would invite you to come and meet these folks who wholeheartedly appreciate this ammenity Administration has provided for us and then decide for yourself if this option works for you. It's so easy to criticize. Let's make what we have even better... But then there IS a saying...
If it ain't broke.... don't FIX it ;D .

Grizzy you are dead on sista! Chat is so much more pleasant without all the spam thanks to the admin. All in chat speak their mind, and we all enjoy different opinions.
Only problem with the chat party is 12v drinks ALL the beer. :-/
Have a great day!

I am not sure how the issue of "moderation, or censorship" came up. I can assure you as a regular user of the chat room that I have never experienced either. We have a good time in chat and as Grizzy said we talk about the daily goings on ... whatever they may be.
We talk about our life, at its best and at its worst. We are truly neighbors in there sitting down to have a chat over coffee, and if it gets too late over a beer or 2 or 6 lol. I can say that I have been in the chat room in the mornings with the Mod's and never felt moderated! I talked to them just as I talk to anyone on this forum. The mods are people too, and they are here because they share the general interest of the people here. I am sure no one would moderate a forum that they had no interest in.
I invite you all to come in and sit a spell and see for yourself. We make jokes, and sometimes chat is serious, we just generally go with the flow in there. Raven

Grizzy's right..... she did forget to say that even though 12v hogs the beer, she hogs the food! ;D
I feel that I have made some real friends in chat. My only regret is that during this time of year, I get back inside to late to chat before bed. I'm on more of a morning and sure have missed my buds.....
As has been stated, we chat about everything and anything and there is just as much laughing as there is seriousness.
For someone to claim "moderation" or "censorship" shows that person has not used the chat room.

censored and moderated naw. good conversation, joke telling, teasing, sharing a few beers and chips and all. I find it a lot of fun and feel there have been some friendships made as well. It is also very good place to ask questions and get real time input from the folks that are in the know or have opinions from what they have learned from their trials. like it alot, but as Paul said its hard this time of year to get in and converse as much as would like with the chores and projects a going. I miss you guys in chat. I wish I had more time for it. But, I will probably have limited time until fall gets here and the days get shorter. In the meantime, I think of y'all when I'm out in the garden.... Just wanted to say that I miss all of ya.

All I can say is the chat room is great!!! Just don't let racerrick boil eggs for ya while you are there, ROFL. I havent had the pleasure I don't believe to talk to you Paul or Flat or poison..... I am in the middle of summer here on the farm also and I can say it is tough to find time to be there much. Like Paul said though with fall and winter coming things will open up a bit.
My youngins were in SD and I had some down time last night and I got on here and I logged on to the room and then browsed the forums a bit. Lo and behold Jen dropped by then Griz and racerrick whtdragon, I tell you what............ It WAS great. This ole boy didn't know just how much he missed the folks here!!!
ANYWAY......... what I am trying to say is that if you do get a chance you should try out the chat room. It is nice to talk to folks who listen and it is real nice to listen to good folks talk.

Native, I would like to take a moment to say how much i enjoyed visiting with you, as well as the others that evening. A huge bonus for me was to find a Brother who shared my beloved old 82nd Airborne Division with me, right here at BHM. Small world.
Oh, also on the aig thing, I requested a thorough cia investigation into that situation, and according to eye witnesses, those aigs were placed in the dairy section of my grocery store by a couple of Taliban terrorist suicide bomber cheekins ! And furthur, two of them were camule aigs, from a suspected bin laden hidout in pakistan. I'm going to try another batch soon, so be sure to wear your steel pot and entrenching tool next time, as it is extremely hazardous in there ! A 2x2xyou is highly reccomended. Next time we will return fire, as well as sustain the cowardice attack from the rear ! :sarcastic:

I gotta say that the chatroom has been a hoot, and is always full of warm & friendly people. I have been coming in quite often since I got the layoff in February. There is only so much side work to do and only so much to do at home. You folks have helped keep my sanity! LOL

p.s.-anyone new to chat has to know that jen goes by the nickname "chainsaw" quite often, so feel free to use it. It's a little thing she has become quite fond of. hehehehe *duckin from whatever she threw at me"
