Hello -

Is there anyone on this forum that has experience with living in Alaska or Maine? *In particular the interior of Alaska. *Is the idea of drilling a well in the state a foolish one? *How do most who live there in the interior supply their water needs during the harsh winter?

We don't live in either AK or Me, but do live at 9500' elevation in the colorado rockies. I have a 420' well and have know problems with it. I have had to bury water line at least 6' to keep things from freezing. the water from the well is a constant 50 degrees year around.

Same here in Maine, though I have never had the water freeze from either the well, or the pipes going to my well (well buried), though I have had them freeze inside.

My sister lives in a cabin in Alaska with her husband, but they don't have running water so that may, or may not be information for you. ??? ??? ???

I think the best estimate of well water temperature is the mean annual temperature. Here in New Brunswick I think it is closer to 40F than 50F. In Alaska I would think it would depend on where you are. I would guess there are no wells in areas of permafrost. Not sure.

We live in Maine and never have had our water freeze, the well is 180 ft deep and the pump is in our cellar.

A lot of peole here in the far north keep a waterhole open in a lake or creek and haul or pump it from there. Whole lot cheaper than drilling a well, especially since with a well you never know if the water will even taste good.

We live in far north Idaho where it gets down to -30 and we have no problems at all with our well.
