I was wondering if there is any particular reason why you never see more than one wind turbine mounted on a pole/tower. Anybody?

Several reasons, turbulence being the primary one.

It almost always makes more sense to go with a larger turbine rather than multiple smaller ones.
As an example...a 10 foot diameter turbine generates 8 times the energy than a 4 foot diameter turbine.

A great site for diy wind power is www.windstuffnow.com. I keep thinking of building a wind turbine, but just have not gotten to it.

The wind turbine has to be able to swivel to always face the wind. Putting the swivel at the top of the tower is easy, anywhere else would require much more engineering (means expensive). Plus, the higher you go, the more wind there is, so a blade lower down the pole automatically would be less efficient. It would also be exposed to more turbulence, and which would pretty much guarranty it would always be the first to fail. Lastly, smaller tower may be supported by guy wires, which would prevent the proper rotation of the blades.
