I know this may seem like a very light topic, compared to others here, but does anyone else have great memories of going to Vacation Bible School for two weeks in the summer?

Our little Methodist church always held it - and it was the high point of most of my summers! We got a box about the size of a Monopoly game - and in that was a work book with Bible studies and craft supplies.

At the end of our two weeks, there was a special service where the double doors were thrown open at the back of the church and all of the children, starting with the tiny nursery kids, going all the way up to the Jr. High kids - marched in carrying the US Flag and the church flag - singing "Onward Christian Soldiers." All the ornery little brats cleaned up pretty good that day, and more than a few adults teared up to see and hear the spectacle!

I'd love to know if others experienced Vacation Bible School - and how they remember it, and if they send their own kids to one now. Do they still have them?

ahhh, VBS, the good ol' days.

I have a lot of good memories from being there.

Our church does VBS every year and kids still love it.

I have alot of good memories of VBS.
I went to VBS ALOT! it was very good though. my Mom was the organizer and leader of it in our church(Southern Baptist) for 27 years. course even Mom couldnt make me go that many years LOL
anyway, yes it was really good.
here in our little town in MT some of us ladies decided to have a VBS for the kids. (nondenominational Christian church). first thing some of the older local ladies told us was they didn't know if we should mention salvation or any verses having anything to do with it; because it might offend some people. we politely told them that we weren't interested in baby sitting and that this was a Christian church wasn't it?
so we did get to actually have a VBS. had one three years, i think and then some church from the eastern part of the US decided that our little church probably needed some help; so they send their youth group every year out here to do our VBS. I don't gripe a bit because our kids love meeting youth and young adults from another part of the country and it is very Christ-oriented.

Our church has a VBS every year. We have it in the afternoon/evening. Everyine participates from infants up to adults who have their own Bible study while the kids are having theirs. The church also serves dinner to the families attending to make it easier on their schedules.

All four of my kids go and love it!

Here are some pictures of the past one.

My mother was ecumenical long before it was pc and the thing to do.

Back in the 1940's my mom sent me to a Baptist Bible School. It was confusing to me for the Sisters told me differently.
But at the end of the Vacation Bible School we all received a copy of the New Testament. We were told to take care of it for if we did not we would surely go to hell. Upon leaving the building I tripped, dropped my Bible and got it dirty. Was terrified I was going to hell immediately. I screamed and screamed and ran home..never have forgotten it.

Also went the Methodist Vacation Bible school that year...thankfully no Bibles at the end.

Wow, Exodus
that is really sad. I am so sorry that happened to you. It astonishes me; my own upbringing and Southern Baptist church experiences might be considered quite strict by some, but nothing severe and totally non-Biblical like that.
it is a shame.

Wow... I have to agree that is a shame that was told to you. I can imagine how scared that would've made you feel... goodness...

I feel thankful in that the VBS that my children attend, I know the teachers and the Pastor and have heard the plan of salvation explained to them in a loving gentle manner.

God bless
