We all know that Ike is causing real problems in Texas but they
just said that 14 of 18 refineries are closed to prepare for the storm.

If the storm surge follows the Huston canal to the sea it will throw a wall
of water 20 + feet high at the refineries that are parked all along the
canal!!

America could be in for a new definition of hard times!! :o :o

Buy your gas ASAP!!

Last night the news was warning that prices good double or triple at the pumps. Today we're filling up the cars and making a Sam's Club run.

Yesterday every gas station in Corinth, ms was packed, some had already run out of gas.Price 3.89.Price in Tupelo(50mi south, 5.00).My Dad called from Florence Al.price 5.35) We all hear report stations that are price gouging what about the companies that make record profits and price per barrel has gone down. I realize with the storm they may be shut down for awhile. Is that the only source we have? Don't think so,and what about stockpiles? oh I'm sorry that is for some other purpose of which we are not included. I understand that certain agencies need gas(fire trucks, police,National guard) but you can bet your sweet bippy that politicians are going to get their "fair" share while "We the people" will have to make do!
Sorry but this just chaps my butt! :o

DH just filled up.....4.00 for regular and the station across the street was closed. We were on empty so we didn't have a choice but to fill up now. Diesel hasn't gone up yet so he's now filling up the truck. Since we are retired we can go a very long time without getting gas again but I worry for those that have to go to work every day. This is crazy!!

So did my DH but the same station was at 3.77.9 today and it is supposed to go higher. ETA: correction of decimal point.

Dear Forum Members,

Folks, as of now in North Carolina, there are places where people are paying as much as $4.79 a gallon!

But the higher prices are actually a blessing in disguise. *So called 'price-gouging' is the free-market's way of assuring that supplies of scarce items will be there when needed. *

Governor Mike Easley's and Attorney General Roy Cooper's crack-down on so-called 'price-gouging,' by keeping prices below what the market will bear, practically assures that supplies will go down and that shortages will result. *Shortages, chaos, followed by rationing and despotism are always the result of government price and wage controls.

As anecdotal proof, out in the country in Lincoln County where gas sells for less than in the city, there were over a dozen sheeple at a time lined up at pumps. *And at the Petro Express, which sells gas for less, the executives had to politely advise customers to take no more than 10 gallons, police had to direct traffic, and by mid-day, some pump handles had bags over them, indicating the tanks were out.

Fortunately, I always keep my tank at least half-full and ideally at three-fourths to nearly full, but never all the way to the top. *My tank was just right when the panic struck. *Hopefully, this will limp me along until the refineries open back up.

Dear Forum Members,

Here is some interesting reading in the economic history on this very subject.

Goom and Doom.

Gas jumped 60 cents here in Indiana hours after the hurricane made landfall.
