My family used to make ethanol but they didn't put it in a car, well perhaps in a trunk for a quick ride down a few dirt roads ;D

I wonder if they figured in the price of the corn, sugar and yeast when they came up with the cost savings. 15% addition of the ethanol would bring a 3.00 gallon down to 2.40. I bought a 100# bag of corn today and it was 15.75. Then you'd have to have to use energy to run the still. It is worth thinking about, though.

We grow potatoes here but I've never had much luck personally making alcohol from potatoes. It's a little complicated I guess. Something I want to work on some more as potatoes can be very cheap here as they sometimes have to dump them in the fall. If you could recover the heat for home heating and hot water while distilling fuel over the winter it might be more cost effective.
